3 Seed Miracle

By Shanna Shanti

Feeling stuck? Are you happy with your bowel movements? Perhaps it is time to acknowledge and support your digestive system. Although I agree with the saying, 'You are what you eat', I think there is more to the story. I believe we are also what we ingest from our environment, including chemicals and toxins absorbed through the skin, the air we breathe, and water we drink. According to Ayurvedic medicine, the stronger our 'Agni', or digestive fire, the easier it is to assimilate nutrients and efficiently eliminate waste from food and the environment. When Agni is strong, we are able to create healthy tissues and experience increased vitality.

So...are you ready to stoke your digestive fires? Only three seeds are needed. I offer two simple recipes that an Ayurvedic Specialist shared with me.

Coriander seeds – Coriander seeds enhance digestion, combat allergies and reduce bloating. They also support the liver, one of the primary organs involved in detox and blood sugar balance.

Cumin – Cumin is thought to have a balancing effect on all three doshas, or primary energies that govern our physiology. Cumin helps to ignite the digestive fire by stimulating digestive enzymes which in turn improves nutrient assimilation.

Fennel seeds – This herb has been traditionally used to stimulate digestive juices, reduce indigestion, prevent gas, and address constipation.

Combine all three raw seeds in equal parts and store in a mason jar for ease of use.

Add 1 tbsp of seed mixture to a pot containing 16 oz filtered or spring water.

Bring to a boil.

Cover, reduce heat and simmer 10-20 minutes.

Strain and enjoy!

Heat seed mixture in a dry, non oiled pan/skillet on low heat. When seeds are slightly toasted (light brown), remove from heat and wait for seeds to cool. Store in a jar and munch on the seed mixture throughout the day, between meals.
